ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an overview of key concepts in neuroanatomy and function pertaining to the clinical expression of trauma and its treatment, specifically from a dance/movement therapy (DMT) perspective. Topics covered include the neural correlates of trauma and PTSD, anatomy of the stress response, current theories and approaches in DMT relating to trauma, current theories and methods in neuroscience as they apply to understanding trauma, and emerging treatment and research models. Readers will be introduced to theories and models elaborated elsewhere in this text (including polyvagal theory, sensorimotor therapy, and resourcing), alongside context drawn from neuroscience research on various imaging methods and emerging perspectives concerning dynamic brain activity in the understanding and treatment of trauma.
