ABSTRACT

Biodiversity and healthy ecosystems are crucial to human wellbeing and the survival of all life on planet Earth. Nonetheless, vast numbers of plant and animal species are under significant threat from climate change. Toxic outputs, habitat destruction and intensive agricultural and industrial practices are together having a significant impact on other ‘living things’ us humans share this planet with. This chapter uses a case study approach to explore the plights of five organisms under significant threat from climate change. Using animal testimony through story, picture and role-play, this chapter invites teachers, teacher educators and children to enter the intimate worlds of plants and animals from across the continents. This chapter enables specific and in-depth interactions with the colourful coral, the powerful polar bear, the busy bee, the ancient sea turtle and the alpine flora. Using dialogical methodologies motivated by the stories of these plants and animals from the air, land and sea, the text provides thought-provoking scenarios of danger, balanced with activities focussed on exploring actions of hope to save these species. Not only does this chapter aim to develop biological and environmental knowledge through skill-based activities using observation, communication, questioning and listening, importantly, it sets out to engender empathy among the children and teachers, with which the stories are shared.
