ABSTRACT

Much of the world's plastic ends up in the ocean. However, due to the success of the BBC's Blue Planet II series, people are now more aware about the impact of plastic on the environment, ocean, ecosystems and ultimately upon our health. Moreover, there's another largely hidden dimension of the plastic crisis: plastic's contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. This chapter examines the nature of plastic, the extent of plastic pollution and the connections between plastic and climate change, as well as strategies for addressing the plastic issue.
