ABSTRACT

Climate change is an increasingly important challenge facing the world today. The Paris Agreement calls for improvements in climate change education (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 2015). The Geography class is well positioned to offer the opportunity to explore this geographical process. This chapter will examine a number of teaching resources, activities and pedagogical approaches that support student learning. It will assist teachers and children in exploring climate change issues through deepening their knowledge and understanding of the topic, equipping children with the skills necessary to take individual and collective action, and heighten awareness not only of the causes and impacts of climate change but also of the role of sustainable development and future implications of climate change that will directly impact on their lives in the future. This chapter will encourage teachers to focus on climate change at the local level before expanding on to national and global levels in order to make climate change more relevant to the children and preventative action more tangible.
