ABSTRACT

A keen sense of climate justice can be awakened through developing the spiritual identity of children within the education system. Children benefit from opportunities to reflect on the wonder of themselves, the world they inhabit with fellow humans, animals, birds, fish, flowers and the stars as wonderful gifts which have been given to them, a gift which, in turn, must be passed on to the future generations. Exploring this appreciation of the world through a Christian lens, in the lives of the saints, early Irish monastic sites and the writings of Pope Francis, who refers to caring for our common home, will provide a platform from which to support children awaking their spirituality and their duty of care to the environment in the battle again climate change. The chapter provides practical ideas for the classroom, school and the home environment which teachers and parents can use with children. It is not enough to learn about climate justice, hearts must be moved to feel passionately about it and hands made active in saving the planet that has been entrusted to this current generation.
