ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how climate change issues can be addressed within physical education (PE) curricula. The potential impacts of climate change, including altered weather patterns and the increasing frequency of hazardous weather events, may adversely affect our ability to maintain regular physical activity participation. By embedding concepts such as care, respect and personal responsibility into our teaching and learning activities, the author outlines how climate awareness can be raised both in schools and in the wider community. In this context, exemplars grounded in Outdoor Education and Cooperative Learning contexts are provided. Additionally, the author examines how the promotion of Active Travel can alleviate some of the causes of climate change, while simultaneously increasing levels of physical activity in schools and beyond. By promoting this culture of movement, informed by a desire to be socially responsible, the chapter provides guidance for raising climate change awareness and action through PE.
