ABSTRACT

A subsequent career as a senior government official ended abruptly – Thomas Fraser Kennedy, evidently, was more independent and forthright than was desirable in such posts. The Association for Preserving the Rivers and Lochs of Scotland was a pressure group building on the passage of the Rivers Pollution Act of 1876. It, and its English analogue, the Fisheries Preservation Society were concerned less with hygienic aspects of water pollution than with the maintenance of sport fishing – in Scotland with the salmon rivers. The house stands on a sort of eminence sloping down on two sides to flat alluvial land towards the river. The sewers of the house are more than usually good, built of dressed and hewn stone of the shape of an egg; the main sewer running up the middle of the house, six feet high, the sewer round the / house three feet.
