ABSTRACT
The object contemplated by the Executive Committee in requesting Mr Logan to undertake the Statistical investigation, of which the results are given in the following pages, was to obtain authentic information respecting the consequences and concomitants of intemperance in Glasgow, with the view of furnishing accurate data from which a statement might be drawn regarding the effects of drinking habits on the general population of Scotland. In February, 1849, we applied to the Glasgow Municipal Police Board, for certain returns relative to the number of cases brought before the magistrates, and persons confined in the different Police Offices in the city, with a specification of the charges entered against them. The Autumnal Circuit Court of Justiciary was held in Glasgow in September, 1848. The Winter Circuit Court of Justiciary was opened in Glasgow on the 5th of March, 1849.
