ABSTRACT

John Garwood and John Robinson served as secretaries to the London City Mission. Like many other religious leaders in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, the LCM leadership feared the impact of urbanization on religious life. The largeness of the population of London will appear when it is compared with that of our other cities and towns. In the “London City Mission Magazine” for January, 1843, it was shewn in detail that the church accommodation of the metropolis was only for 351,290 persons, and the chapel accommodation only for 250,128, making a total of church and chapel accommodation for only 601,418 of a population of 2,103,279 persons. The London City Mission was established May 16, 1835. It has been in operation, therefore, more than ten years. Only funds are wanted to enable the Mission to enter upon most important fields of labour, with every prospect of the Divine blessing on their operations.
