ABSTRACT

Since the opening of the Great Exhibition on the 1st of May, the excitement and enthusiasm called forth by that great event have had time to subside, and it is now more possible to describe calmly and consecutively the events and emotions of the day, and their effect upon one unaccustomed to English manners and Englishmen. The most efficient preservative from tumult or disturbance seemed to be the love and loyalty of all the English for their Queen, and their wish to show her that they were her most faithful guards. The English machinery is wonderful, and the working of it is interesting even to those unacquainted with the peculiar construction and mode of working. The Royal Family is at present accompanied by the brother of Prince Albert, one of the few German Princes who can boast of any popularity in their native land.
