ABSTRACT

The well-known correspondence with Cardinal Wiseman made Mr. Rochfort Clarke the hero, the idol, the quasi-apostle of thousands; and the people have not the smallest doubt that the epistle the people are about to quote will strengthen his proud position, and shed, in their eyes, a fresh halo round his name. There are few better tests of feeling, taste, and character, than the mode of looking at any given object, and the class of associations which the observer habitually connects with it. The land will be again overrun with pretended ascetics, who make their abandonment of innocent and even improving pleasures, an excuse for indulging their envy, their malignity, or their pride; and instead of reverting to the simplicity of the early Christians, the people shall simply witness the revival of the worst days of the Commonwealth.
