ABSTRACT

The power which the increased means of production places in the hands of the capitalist, led to a rapid decline in the price of labour. The building, and other trades, endeavoured to maintain their ground by expending enormous sums in strikes, but they were, for the most part, failures; as, no matter how large the funds in possession of the Trades' Unions, they became ultimately exhausted, and the foiled and defeated artizan found himself in a worse position than before. The manufacturing system is rapidly producing a crisis in the European system of government; and no matter how our quondam rulers may endeavour to bolster it up by flimsy expedients and unmeaning declamation, the necessities of the people will force a change.
