ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a pamphlet which was one of the contributions to the sustained campaign organized by the American Loyalists in London to press Lord Shelburne's ministry to secure financial compensation for the Loyalists from the America. The Loyalists had sacrificed their careers, homes and fortunes in order to support Britain in the War of American Independence and they lobbied ministers, produced pamphlets and handbills, and formally petitioned Parliament in support of their efforts to secure adequate recompense for their sacrifices. The pamphlet, like other publications by the American Loyalists, maintained that Britain had urged them to support the British cause during the American War of Independence and, since they had done so at great cost to themselves, they deserved to be recompensed for their sacrifices. Since the Americans could not be persuaded to offer adequate compensation to the Loyalists, then the British people, through the British Treasury, should bear the burden of compensation.
