ABSTRACT

Teaching is like a huge literature search: there is so much to read and sift through that it can become quite overwhelming. Teaching is something of a role-play. Burnout can often be attributed to emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and lack of personal accomplishment. Early-career teachers have historically expressed dismay at how poorly they feel their studies have prepared them for managing classroom behaviour given how central to success such preparation is. Rules and routines are ideally linked to the whole-school management system, use a familiar language and cover such procedures as entering and leaving the classroom answering questions, submitting work, engaging in class, organising belongings and dressing appropriately. Where students sit, where the teacher sits, what is on the whiteboard, how equipment is accessed, where classroom rules are posted— these are all elements of the physical design of the classroom and need to be considered and planned.
