ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses bullying is a subset of aggression with several concepts and many forms. It explores how to recognise different roles students take in bullying incidents. Physical bullying can include behaviours such as hitting, pushing, shoving and tripping where a stronger or older person or group attacks a helpless victim. Social bullying involves isolating a person and spreading untrue rumours and malicious gossip. It is less likely than other forms of bullying to trigger negative consequences for the perpetrator from an adult. Cyberbullying is bullying using electronic means, including equipment and platforms or services. The common view of bullying is that it involves a person or a group who is bullying, and the person being victimised. Students may be reluctant to report bullying for fear of retaliation from the person who is bullying them. Many students think that teachers make the bullying worse.
