ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the key elements of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and describes the three-tiered continuum of learner support implemented within the PBS schoolwide framework of prevention and intervention. PBS encourages teachers to actively respond to unproductive or problem behaviour by using information about past behaviours to arrange the environment to reduce the likelihood of future occurrences of the behaviour and to target and teach acceptable behaviours to replace the behaviour. PBS emphasises the importance of the environment, with behaviour being viewed as having a contextual dimension. PBS also focuses on the purpose or function of a problem or unproductive behaviour. A critical part of the assessment process involves analysing important environmental factors and external influences to build a hypothesis as to why the learner is engaging in the behaviour. Valued and positive outcomes for both learners and staff are at the heart of PBS philosophy and practice.
