ABSTRACT

This chapter examines why the effects of early adolescence need to be considered when teaching middle-years learners. It explores how middle-years learners view the world and how the world impacts on them. The chapter describes how to connect with middle-years learners in ways that build their confidence and competence as learners. It discusses that student engagement as a multifaceted concept and its role in students achieving a secure and successful future characterised by personal achievement, physical and emotional wellbeing and a balanced way of life and successful schooling. The middle years have consistently been associated with a significant increase in the number of students who become alienated and disillusioned with schooling and who demonstrate a general decrease in academic motivation. A positive learning environment includes empowering students with a sense of autonomy through choice and voice in their learning.
