ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author advance a theory about how people engage with numeracy. They explores themes relating to how people describe and think about numeracy; how numeracy is used; and how it is produced. Various attempts have been made to come to terms with the variety of numerical practices found in real life. Thus the theme of visibility, for example, helps the people focus on the kinds of ways the authors discuss numeracy in communications with each other about numerical knowledge, its management and its control. The theme of visibility among numerical practices is demonstrated by the application of a specialised vocabulary, symbolic systems and the organisation of numeracy content into topic headings and content domains. The authors have provided various tools tor implementation when engaging with numerical practices. The theme of useability is apparent where the concerns are with the application of numeracy.
