ABSTRACT
Researchers use well-tested methods to gather the clues and information needed to help them ‘solve’, understand or explain their intrigue, mystery or puzzle. This chapter introduces the well-tested processes that researchers use to give shape and direction to these efforts. Some researchers pursue their research in a linear, logical and step-by-step way. In more technical terms, this is referred to as a deductive research methodology. It is associated with positivist paradigms and often uses quantitative approaches to data. The resources available and the time period in which the research study must be completed are important practical considerations in refining the final research question. Careful design of research takes time, and it is again time well spent. Essential to the design phase of the research process is a sound appreciation of the ethical considerations associated with doing research. Once data collection is complete, the phase of data processing and analysis can begin.
