ABSTRACT

The quality of a school is therefore appropriately judged by the quality of teaching and learning offered and experienced by its members. This chapter presents such a view by mapping the connections between learning, teaching and organisational structures, while emphasising the role of management and leadership in securing quality teaching and learning. In advocating a holistic approach to improving core technology and learning productivity, the contribution made by school leadership and management is crucial. A policy emphasis at system level on student learning outcomes is focusing schools on ways to improve their present ‘low levels of learning productivity’. Particularly in larger schools, the principal may be several layers removed from the classroom and teaching and learning and the attendant issues surrounding the technical core. Evidence suggests that if schools are to achieve improvements in student learning outcomes then new approaches to teaching and learning are required.
