ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the competency-based systems, defines the term 'competency' and examines some positive features of a competency-based approach. The competency approach will have an impact on field education whichever form it takes. The chapter argues that the vital issue for field education is 'curriculum versus competency', but that measurable standards be established, with assessment based on evidence and fair, transparent assessment principles. The assessment principles draw attention to the importance of explicit assessment activities and the need to seek and specify evidence that will demonstrate achievement of standards. The value of competency-based approaches can be found in the emphasis on standards for fieldwork and their impact on the learning contract, and incorporation of assessment principles in the assessment of those standards. The integrated nature of competency standards and the need for learning and assessment to take place in both ‘classroom’ and workplace necessitates an educative and assessment partnership between providers and agencies.
