ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the skills and attributes people need to develop in order to put nutrition science into action. Well trained nutrition professionals are able to integrate foundational knowledge of human and nutrition science with detailed knowledge of diets and eating patterns, food composition and nutrient value and to apply this across different cultural and population groups in different contexts. ‘Community nutrition’, although a largely superseded term, has been described as public health nutrition at the local level or with smaller population reach. Key attributes of an effective nutrition workforce include its competence to meet the health needs of the communities it is working within. Science has contributed to knowledge through inquiry based on observable and measurable evidence according to the principles of reasoning and experimentation. It requires the formulation and testing of hypotheses via the collection of data through observation and experimentation.
