ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the governance of nutrition internationally, identifying the key agencies and systems involved. It explores the nutrition issues that are impacted by economic development. The chapter provides a brief introduction to the role of nutrition in emergency situations including natural disasters and conflict. Maintaining food security— and therefore the health of individuals and populations— in terms of both quantity and quality of food is an international endeavour. A consistent feature of community and household nutrition development initiatives is that women are actively involved and that they are literate. The need for emphasis on and deployment of resources in public health to serve greater population numbers, to prevent suffering and premature death, and to take account of the planet, is evident. The delivery of sustainable and nutritious food to all people is the primary focus of effective food systems, thus collaborative, international action to address drivers of food system changes are necessary.
