ABSTRACT

Writing a presentation involves a different set of skills to that required for essays and reports. No doubt the students have witnessed a presentation where the speaker has merely read directly from her or his notes. Such presentations are usually delivered in a monotone voice and are very dull: the speaker lacks eye contact with the audience, resulting in people tuning out. Effective presentations are those where the speaker has delivered relevant information to interested listeners who can recall what was said. A common form of presentation is the oral exam. Such exams test the student’s knowledge and capabilities through spoken interaction between the students and the examiners. They range from a straightforward question-and-answer format to problem-based or hypothetical scenarios that may evaluate their interpersonal communication, or diagnostic or creative abilities.
