ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the students are shown many time-saving hints to help in their investigations, but first they need to dispel certain myths. Even supposedly neutral introductory textbooks should be treated with caution. There will be parts that are more detailed, clearer, or better written than others. For this reason alone, the students should consult a number of sources. The chapter gives some pointers to the students about time-saving ways of finding what the students need. The key places to start looking for information are: lecture notes, introductory textbooks, discipline dictionaries, subject reading lists, bibliographies: using the springboard technique, review chapters and articles, online journal and reference databases and newspapers and current affairs magazines. The Dewey system catalogues material according to decimal ‘call numbers’ that are assigned to specific topic areas.
