ABSTRACT

This chapter shows some effective ways to the students to read and organise their material. Reading academic work is not like flipping through a magazine or even a work of fiction; it takes more time and effort. In some cases the students may need to read a section of an article or book a number of times to understand it fully. The filing system has three easy steps: first step is, using a word-processing program or piece of paper, place a heading on the page indicating a keyword, topic, or issue, and repeat this for all the basic parts of the students essay that the students identified earlier in their essay plan. Second step is, sheet of paper or page on the students computer screen, put the heading ‘Bibliography’ or ‘Reference list’. Third step is, as the students take notes, enter them on the topic-headed pages. This way, the students immediately organise their notes into topics related to their essay.
