ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and Buddhist Economics, the successes of sustainable thinking in both economic and environmental management. It uses examples and studies from Thai communities in Ban Lahork-Krasang in Buriram, Ban Pred Nai in Trad and Chumporn Cabana, Resort and Water Sports Centre in Chumporn. The Good Governance for Social Development and the Environment Institute is a non-profit Thai organisation with the following goals: to focus on social development and environmental issues; to promote sustainable development through increasing community and individual participation; in this way to reduce conflict and foster good governance; and to disseminate knowledge to improve public awareness. The Industrial Revolution has led to many technological advances and a better lifestyle for humanity, but failing to consider holistic environmental systems has created long-term negative externalities. Growth-oriented development has continuously exploited common-pooled resources, which are both non-excludable and subtractable.
