ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how sufficiency thinking was first applied to agriculture through the New Theory. After explaining the New Theory and how it differs from traditional farming methods, data are presented on its effects. The New Theory provides a practical way to apply sufficiency thinking to the agricultural sector. It enables farmers to develop a sufficiency mindset at different levels, step by step. Thailand is an important agricultural country that produces food for the world. Under the New Theory, farmers apply a practical version of sufficiency thinking called the New Theory, only in agriculture to optimise land and water usage, but also in living their lives more holistically. Once farmers are successful in applying the New Theory, they normally become role-model farmers and their land becomes a demonstration model for interested farmers and the general public. The government must demonstrate faith in the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and New Theory, promote them consistently, then establish appropriate policies and projects.
