ABSTRACT

So many teachers know so little about Aboriginal culture and about Aboriginal education history, there is very little understanding of the reasons why Aboriginal people might be reluctant to have much to do with schools, and often even less understanding of what might be the appropriate ways to invite Aboriginal community involvement. Research shows that high levels of parental and community involvement is strongly related to improved student outcomes and that family and community involvement can have a major impact on student learning, regardless of the social or cultural background of the family. Consultation is an ongoing partnership that is mutually beneficial. Consultation and participation constitute a two-way process—a partnership based on mutual respect and understanding. All new teaching staff have the right to know and the obligation to find out what First Nation country they will be teaching in after obtaining their teaching qualifications.
