ABSTRACT

The theme of reconciliation permeates this text, as educating for a better future involves two critical elements: teaching all Australians to understand, respect and appreciate Indigenous history and culture; and effectively teaching Indigenous students so that they attain educational and life outcomes commensurate to their non-Indigenous peers. Reconciliation Australia suggests that 'a key objective for the reconciliation process is to improve the knowledge and understanding of Australians about how they can be involved and help to overcome Indigenous disadvantage'. Clearly, the role of teachers is vital to the success of the reconciliation process. Reconciliation Australia also produces a quarterly newsletter, which provides regular updated information on the process of reconciliation, and includes articles on what schools around the country are doing to contribute to the process. Teachers have a vital role to play in contributing to the reconciliation process. The role involves teaching for reconciliation and educating for the future rather than just teaching the current state of play.
