ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the term integrated learning is used to capture a range of practices that focus on bringing together particular parts or elements of learning. Integrated learning provides a framework that gives students the opportunity to access and make connections between skills and knowledge. As mentioned previously, the concept of integrated learning is referred to in a number of ways. These include, but are not limited to, integrated curriculum, multidisciplinary curriculum/learning, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary curriculum, student-centred learning, curriculum integration, negotiated curriculum, connected curriculum and fused curriculum. Students also benefit from an integrated curriculum approach, as they can see relationships between and among content areas and understand concepts that cross curriculum lines. Additionally, due to the more complex nature of this approach, students have opportunities to think critically and creatively, and to transfer knowledge to solve problems.
