ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the different developmental areas of primary years students. It learns people more about the developmental needs of children and how people as a teacher can support all children in their learning. The chapter explores the concrete operational stage, where most primary years students are located. As part of the cognitive process, primary years students are able to respond to a variety of internal and external stimuli. This also includes the development of the ability to ignore distracting stimuli that may not be effective for the learning process. Primary years students also develop a large general knowledge base during middle childhood. Their long-term knowledge grows and becomes organised and structured within the brain. Primary years students may also become an expert in a particular area in which they are interested. During middle childhood, primary years students begin to describe themselves and their own characteristics.
