ABSTRACT

The explanations presented in school science are based on phenomena that, for the students, are not contested or available to be contested. Science is a field of endeavour constructed by humans and, in the end, it is the science community that decides what counts as science. In summary, Eurocentric science, the science represented in science classrooms all over the globe, is community’s attempt to explain the world in ways that influence every living thing on this planet. All theories in science have the potential to be transformative, because they support scientists to ask different questions. The disciplinary power of scientific theories and their internal mechanisms is that they have both explanatory and predictive power. Theories are so important that they become embedded in the language of science. By revealing the patterns, science is providing humans with greater insight into how the Earth and universe work.
