ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to locate the works of Patrick Weller in the conspectus of the field of Australian administrative history. One of Weller's first major publications was a university textbook largely containing public policy case studies, some of which are fascinating diagnostic studies of actors, institutions and processes in dynamic context, and an outstanding example of extraordinary scholarship. Weller's research and writings touch on many aspects of administrative history in the Australian context and in selected Westminster systems. Not surprisingly, therefore, Weller's influence is pervasive in some aspects of administrative history, but in others it is more tangential. Some of Weller's passing interests in administrative history developed from his original work as an academic consultant to the Coombs Commission.
