ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the role of theory in framing rural criminological research. It does so by discussing theory-relevant rural literatures from the late 20th century and the first two decades of the 21st century. It argues that no matter how little rural criminology researchers consciously consider theory, theory nonetheless frames how they design their research, all the way from data collection, to data analysis, to the interpretation of their findings.
