ABSTRACT

Building on the idea of youth as knowledge producers in relation to issues in their own lives, this chapter highlights the ways in which participatory visual methods can play a key role in working towards social change. Drawing on examples that highlight the potential for policy and community dialogue, the chapter focuses on the use of tools and methods such as photovoice, participatory video/cellphilming, digital storytelling, blogging, and community radio. The examples come primarily from research across Indigenous settings in Canada and work with youth in under-resourced areas in South Africa. The chapter considers implications for further work in a range of areas including ethics, multimodal platforms, and community archiving.
