ABSTRACT

One of the major pieces of work undertaken as part of the Conversations process was the preparation of an Ordinal, designed for use in the future United Church. This chapter traces the theological and liturgical influences which shaped the Ordinal, and demonstrates that, although the unity scheme of the 1960s failed, the Ordinal proved hugely influential in subsequent liturgical revision across the worldwide Anglican Communion. Moreover, by establishing a widely accepted liturgical text, it also helped to prepare Methodist and Anglican worshippers for union after the initial talks had failed.
