ABSTRACT

For the past twenty-five years, the ever-increasing importance, for a very large audience, of science fiction and fantasy universes such as Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Game of Thrones has been enriched by the involvement and sustained participation of active fan communities. Political mobilization provides among the most interesting examples in the last ten years. This chapter, after establishing the necessary context, will address the question of political faith (hope, enthusiasm, commitment): the fictional references, as a new form of propaganda, aim to produce strong feelings of sharing and belonging, and a sense of participation for the audience.
