ABSTRACT

Finding myself writing this introduction on the same day that Greta Thunberg is addressing the United Nations, it seems impossible not to understand her parrhesia concerning the biospheric crisis as also constituting undeniable (but mostly denied) evidence of a crisis of science, a crisis of education and a crisis of the relationship between the generations. How is it that we have gotten to a point where it seems all but impossible to respond adequately to a planetary threat of our own making, and where the only person who seems capable of making sense of this disaster is a sixteen-year-old girl who, as she herself has just said, ‘should be back in school on the other side of the ocean’?
