Janina Bauman’s memorable conclusion about the reality of war, so dramatically and beautifully described in her autobiography ‘Winter in the Morning’ was that ‘the hardest thing of all is to remain human in inhuman conditions’. Lydia Bauman offers a personal view of her mother’s ways of maintaining that humanity in the face of the Holocaust.
