ABSTRACT
This chapter will offer the reader an insight into the role of the critical care nurse in providing patient and family centred care, and an understanding of the requirements and professional framework for a critical care nurse. It will also provide insight into factors that impact patient flow from admission to discharge and transfer in and out of the critical care areas, and an opportunity to build a knowledge base and develop nursing skills specific to participating as an effective member of the multidisciplinary critical care team. It will deliver readers an understanding of the role of the critical care nurse in end of life care of the patient and process involved in organ and tissue donation.
