ABSTRACT

Rooted in European conspiracy tradition, the Judeo-Masonic conspiracy myth has met with special success in the Middle East, following its own path, ensued from the specific regional events. Anti-Masonic propaganda was spread in the Levant by Catholic milieus since the eighteenth century, but it did not really infiltrate the Islamic contexts until the foundation of the State of Israel. Afterwards, the anti-Jewish and anti-Masonic conspiracy imagery has been widely used and fostered by numerous governments in the Middle East to fight Israel, demonising the enemy. In this chapter, I will focus on propaganda especially promoted in religious environments: Christian (where it originated) and Islamic (official institutions or Islamic organisations such as movements and parties or jihadi groups), investigating its derivations, following its developments, and illustrating its main topics.
