ABSTRACT
In this chapter the landscape of child protection is profiled with respect to the distinctive practice of assessment. This chapter will outline the nature and scope of assessment at specific decision-making points in the child welfare continuum; provide an overview of the content and context of assessment; describe some of the frameworks and tools used to support consistent and accurate decisions; and, discuss some of the tensions that confront practitioners in this contested area of practice.
