ABSTRACT

South African school education has undergone drastic changes since the dawn of the new political dispensation in 1994. The transformation of South Africa has seen many social changes in many spheres including in education. Education like others within different spheres of South African social spectrum had to embark on the process of democratization. The democratization of education in South Africa happened amidst efforts on part of the department of education to deal with educational challenges brought about by failed education system and ramifications of the struggle for freedom and ending apartheid. There were many initiatives to revitalize schools such as Culture of Learning and Teaching Services, especially in previously disadvantaged townships. The democratization of education has seen also changes in the systems of teacher professionalism such as developmental appraisal system intended for continual professional growth, shared learning, and development by teachers and their peers. The departments of education have since provided technological resources including computers and smart boards to schools.
