ABSTRACT

The new education dispensation started with the promulgation of the South African Schools Act (1996) which gave powers to school governing bodies to govern schools. The role of school governing bodies has remained one of the highly discussed aspects of school leadership to date. Chapter 2 conceptualizes the notion of school governance. The literature review of scholarly papers and policy documents is done in order to put school governance into perspective. In this chapter, the role of school governing bodies is discussed within the frame of shared school governance. The chapter highlights some of the opportunities and challenges of leading school governance within the South African school context. The chapter concludes by making suggestions on how school leadership could make school governance effective within the South African school context.
