ABSTRACT

The integration of learners from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds has become a pinnacle to transform schools and make them accessible to all. The process has needed many students to move to schools that were traditionally not designated for them. Therefore, during the post-apartheid era schools have become more multicultural and multilingual. This chapter conceptualizes the notions of multicultural and multilingual education. A comprehensive literature on the tenets of multicultural and multilingual education is made. Furthermore, a historical overview of the challenges of language policy and language in schools is discussed. The chapter draws some lessons on how school leadership could manage and lead a multicultural and multilingual education environment within the South African school context.
