ABSTRACT

Managing and leading quality of teaching and learning in schools is regarded as a core function of school leadership. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of literature on managing quality within a school context. It deals with the school management teams (SMT) as the school leadership structure. The SMT works closely with the curriculum implementation and should therefore have a particular level of knowledge and skills of curriculum leadership and management in their schools. Leadership occurs between the leader and follower. It happens within the group context where the leader interacts with the leader. Curriculum leadership is “a facilitating process in which the leader works with others to find common purpose, build collaborative teams, structure a way of working, and coordinate many complex activities”. In many instances, the quality of teaching and learning is affected by the shortage of resources such as the learning and teaching support materials.
