ABSTRACT

The resources required to successfully host a FIFA World Cup are substantial, and the management of this event is extremely complex. The disciplines that underpin sourcing and managing resources for FIFA World Cups are resource management, project management and logistics. Organisational theorists have argued since the 1980s that the resources that organisations have access to, and that they can use to achieve a competitive advantage, allow some of them to sustainably perform better than their competitors. Project management has been defined as the “management discipline that plans, organizes and controls people, money and cash” to ensure successful completion of a project while mitigating the relevant risks. Logistics involve the movement and storage of inventory, including order processing, purchasing, transportation, production, inventory management, distribution, and related systems. The management of tangible goods for a FIFA World Cup is driven by the capacity planning and demand planning implemented during the planning and sourcing processes.
