ABSTRACT

A deeper understanding about the various health implications of women’s roles in wildlife trafficking may help to improve the efficacy and efficiency of responses to the harm and efforts to prevent it. Interventions may underperform or fail to meet expectations if they fail to consider the health implications of women’s roles in wildlife. This chapter explores the health implications of women’s involvement in wildlife trafficking, using multiple measures (e.g., key informant interviews, review of literature) of human health and different roles for women in wildlife trafficking. Taken together, exploring the intersectionality of how, when, and why physical, social, and mental health dimensions connect to women’s roles in wildlife trafficking offers exciting avenues for research and to more effective interventions designed to reduce risk.
