ABSTRACT

Despite his popularity and citation throughout a wide range of sexual revolutionary texts, Watts’ role in the sexual revolution and early queer liberation movements has been unexplored by scholars. Similarly, there exists few extended treatments of his writing on sexuality and gender, with the notable exception of Miriam L. Levering’s “Alan Watts on Nature, Gender, and Sexuality: A Contemporary View.” Levering acknowledges Watts’ place in the countercultural and sexual revolution, focusing on Watts’ contemporary relevance. My own contribution seeks to place Watts among his contemporaries and the countercultural discourse of gender and sexuality in order to demonstrate Watts’ importance to sexual liberation movements, particularly his central role in the emerging rhetoric of sexual liberation within queer liberation movements.
